First Irish Deaf Film Festival was hosted during 12th-14th October 2012 at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin 1.
This event was the first of its kind in Ireland and was for Deaf people who are unable to access their local cinemas due to lack of subtitles. All films shown had subtitles and was accessible to all Deaf and hard of hearing people. We aimed to promote and showcase films by Deaf and hard of hearing filmmakers from Ireland and around the world through the medium of Sign Language.
Tickets for the festival was sold out two months in advance which shows huge demand for this kind of event.
We got very little funding for the first festival – our main funds came from fundraising events.
